Agence France-Presse reported that the G7 threatened, in a statement on Friday, Iran to impose “severe additional sanctions on it if it sends ballistic missiles to Russia.”
The joint statement from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan said: “If Iran begins sending ballistic missiles or related technologies to Russia, we will be prepared to respond in a rapid and coordinated manner, including by imposing severe additional sanctions.”
The statement added: “We are very concerned about reports that Iran is considering transferring such weapons to Russia, after providing it with drones used in ongoing attacks against civilians in Ukraine.”
According to the agency, the United States cannot currently confirm that ballistic missile deliveries have actually taken place, but a senior White House official said there is a “real risk that this could happen.”
The agency quoted the American official as saying: “One of the options (sanctions) that we have studied (within the G7) is to stop Iranian airline flights to Europe.”
