Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, stated that the consequences of the Israeli ground operation in Rafah would be disastrous for the residents of Gaza, and the United Nations hopes that it can be avoided.
Dujarric said in a press conference, “These reports are very disturbing. The consequences of the ground operation in Rafah in the current circumstances will be disastrous for the residents of Gaza, the humanitarian situation, and everyone around us.”
He added: “We really hope that this will be avoided, and as far as we know, negotiations are continuing and we hope that the two parties will be able to agree on a ceasefire.”
Today, Friday, the Israeli military-political cabinet approved the plan for the operation in Rafah, which has become the main center for refugees from the rest of the Palestinian Strip.
The Israeli army has continued its military operations against the Gaza Strip, since last October 7, when the Hamas movement, which controls the Strip, announced the start of Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood,” in which thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel, and its forces stormed Israeli settlements adjacent to the Strip. This caused the death of about 1,200 Israelis, in addition to the capture of about 250 others.
