Karbala/Nina/ The branch of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate in Holy Karbala organized a discussion panel on the “Right to Access to Information” law proposed by the Iraqi government after the first reading under the dome of Parliament, in the presence of a member of the Legal Committee in the House of Representatives, MP Muhammad Jassim Al-Khafaji, and a number of specialized journalists and academics.
The head of the union branch, Hussein Al-Shammari, said that the discussion session aims to diagnose the shortcomings in the paragraphs and articles of the proposed law and the extent of its compatibility with the right to obtain information guaranteed by the Iraqi constitution.
He added that the episode included a detailed explanation of the articles of the law by a member of the House of Representatives, indicating the reasons that called on the Iraqi government to introduce it, as well as the relationship of the law to the rights of Iraqi journalists to obtain information and documents related to their media work.
Karbala journalists expressed their rejection of most of the provisions of the law because they intersect with the articles of the Journalists’ Rights Law, which guarantees their right to obtain the information and data they need in their work, in addition to the fact that the proposed law limits freedom of expression and puts the media in embarrassment in front of its audience.
For his part, Al-Khafaji promised to discuss the recommendations of the panel discussion with the relevant committee, expressing his thanks to the branch of the Journalists Syndicate in Holy Karbala and the governorate’s journalists, describing the meeting as fruitful and resulting in observations and additions that cannot be ignored due to their great importance./End
