The Executive Director of the Athletics Federation, Zaidoun Bassem, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), today, Monday: “Participation in the 11th Asian Indoor Championship is the first official external championship for the team according to the Federation’s curriculum for the year 2024, which began on the seventeenth of this month in The Iranian city of Tehran, with the participation of 28 Asian countries, is a tournament that qualifies for the Olympic Indoor Games according to a special rating prepared by the International Federation and also qualifies for the Asian Indoor Games.”
Bassem added, “Our players were able to achieve outstanding results, as player Murtada Azhar Hameed, who achieved a new Iraqi indoor record today in the 60-meter event, qualified for the final round. Likewise, player Yasser Ali Muhammad won a bronze medal in the 400-meter event, and player Nour al-Din won a bronze medal in the 400-meter event. Adel Mirza in the 800-meter category, in addition to the 1,500 and 3,000 categories for the player Muhammad Abdullah Mahal, Amir Sobeih Sayhoud for the pole vault, and Sajjad Saadoun Nasser in the heptathlon events, as well as the 4 x 400-meter relay team and others. There are new medals and qualifying numbers waiting for our heroes in the coming hours.”
Bassem explained that “the preparations for this tournament were not at the level of ambition due to the scarcity of funds and lack of support, and no camp was held as happened last year,” noting that “the game federation used a grant from the Olympic Committee at the beginning of this year.”
