Baghdad/Nina/ The American newspaper “The Hill” reported that a judge in New York State refused to postpone the implementation of a ruling against former President Donald Trump requiring him to pay $355 million in a civil fraud case.
According to the newspaper, Trump’s legal team asked Judge Arthur Engoron to postpone the implementation for 30 days in order to “protect the appeal rights of the accused and ensure an orderly process after the ruling.”
“You have failed to explain, let alone justify, any basis for staying the decision,” Engoron wrote in an email response to Trump lawyer Clifford Robert’s motion filed with the court on Thursday. “I am confident that the Appellate Division will protect your appellate rights.” .
Engoron ordered Trump to pay a $354.8 million fine, plus interest, last week after discovering that he conspired to alter his net worth to obtain tax and insurance benefits.
Since Engoron’s ruling last Friday, more than $87,000 in interest has been added to that amount every day.
Top Trump Organization executives, including Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, were ordered to pay several million dollars as well.
Appeal efforts were also initiated by the formal ruling placed on the court’s docket. Trump and the other defendants have 30 days to appeal from the date of Engoron’s decision./End 8
