A Michigan police chief said a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver crashed into a toddler’s birthday party at a yacht club on Saturday, killing a young brother and sister and injuring several others, including Some people were seriously injured.
An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother died at the scene of the accident when a 66-year-old woman fell from a 25-foot building at the Swan Creek Rowing Club in Berlin Township around 3 p.m. Troy Goodnough said it is located 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit.
“First responders described the scene as extremely chaotic and emotionally charged for those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” he said.
Three children and six adults were flown by two helicopters or ambulances to area hospitals, some with life-threatening injuries, he said. Other injured persons received first aid at the scene and some were taken to hospital by private vehicles.
Goodnow did not identify the woman driving the vehicle but said she was being held in the Monroe County Jail on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death.
He said she is cooperating with authorities and may face more charges as the investigation continues.
