This summer, both Marvel and DC are coming out swinging. The MCU has The Fantastic Four: First Steps, its colourful ‘60s-set outing for Marvel’s first family. But on the flip side, DC is going big with the Blue Boy Scout as James Gunn launches the all-new DC Universe with Superman. This time, it’s David Corenswet in the tights, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane – and as this new trailer shows, Superman has all kinds of fights to face.
There’s plenty here you won’t have seen in a Superman movie before. Not just Krypto the super-dog, seen in previous teasers, but also Kal-El fighting a whacking great kaiju in the middle of Metropolis. But he’s also facing some tough questions after an initially flirty conversation with Lois Lane – who’s well aware that mild-mannered Clark Kent is actually the Uber-mensch. While this looks like a step away from the doom and gloom of Zack Snyder’s DCEU, there are still questions about the role Superman has to play in the world.
Elsewhere, we get more from Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, fresh glimpses at fellow heroes Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner; a trip to the crystalline Fortress Of Solitude; and what seems to be nefarious nanotech-esque technology. There’s a focus, too, on saving people, people cheering Supes on, and Kal-El really trying to be a force for good in the world – all backed by an electric guitar take on the classic John Williams Superman score.
We’ll discover if Gunn’s Superman allows the DCU to take flight when it hits UK cinemas on 11 July. Stock up on shiny red boots now.
