The late-night host discusses Donald Trump’s questionable sale of his ailing Truth Social Network and why he’s pissed off about something again.
Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert began his appearance on The Late Show with a surprise: “Breaking News: Donald Trump is upset about something.”
The host brought up the former president’s latest complaint that he is being falsely portrayed by Democrats as someone who wants to destroy Obamacare, which he previously campaigned on and recently said he wanted to “kill” it.
Colbert said his opponents want to keep it and believe “people like radical political theory alive.”
This week, his social media network, Truth Social, also went public and is set to merge, giving Trump a new net worth of $4 billion, which would make him one of the 500 richest people in the world. “He made $4 billion misspelling things on the toilet,” Colbert said.
Trump’s staff estimate its total value at $13 billion, a figure described as “far from reality” considering the company lost $49 million in the first nine months of 2023. ” He said.
Colbert said the whole thing had an “attractive air of corruption”.
He also claimed this week that someone has compared him to Jesus Christ, something Colbert quipped he was in many ways, as he was also a brilliant capitalist who owned Dead Sea property and once sold golden sandals.
“Talk about people who are out of touch with reality,” he said before mentioning controversial independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who Democrats believe is taking votes away from Biden.
Colbert said he “could use some help from some big names to help his campaign,” and after teasing the big names, he has now announced a running mate in Nicole Shanahan. Stars with much lower profile.
The reason, he explained, is that she was a “major campaign donor” who helped fund his Super Bowl ad.
Democratic strategist James Carville has also been criticized for blaming the party’s problems on “too many preachy women.”
He said the message about saving the planet and needing to “eat your peas” was too feminine, which Colbert said was “suspiciously James Cavill-specific.”
Seth Meyers
On “The Late Show,” Seth Meyers talked about Trump’s hush money trial being scheduled for April, which means jury selection could begin soon. “Good luck finding 12 impartial New Yorkers,” he joked. “He wouldn’t be more hated if he showed up in Red Sox gear,” Meyers added.
This week Trump also urged Israel to end the Gaza war. “It’s weird that Trump is on the same page as Bernie Sanders,” he said.
Former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer warned this week that current judges are moving away from the values of the Constitution. “To be fair, the Founding Fathers couldn’t have predicted luxury yachts,” Meyers joked while showing a photo of Clarence Thomas.
The IRS estimates that about 1 million people did not file taxes in 2020. “I would have done my taxes, but if I remember correctly, in 2020 my kid was using our printer for kindergarten,” he said.
