Sony Pictures confirmed on Saturday morning that Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivered an opening day record for the studio and franchise on Friday with $168m from 4,487 sites.
The spectacular debut blew away the unadjusted $157.4m in from previous record-holder Avengers: Endgame in April 2019 (in real terms that would now equate to $205m) and puts that film’s opening weekend frame in the spotlight.
Sony sources are estimating the new release will gross approximately $325m over the weekend, which would make it the second-highest opening weekend of all time in North America, usurping the last Spider-Man film, No Way Home, on $260.1m in December 2021 ($311.6m when adjusted for inflation).
However studio executives tend to downplay public projections and Brand New Day may go considerably higher. Endgame remains the target as the top opening weekend of all time on $357.1m, which adjusts for inflation to an unattainable $466.7m.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has wowed critics and earned an A CinemaScore and a Certified Fresh 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 98% audience score.
Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo star, and Destin Daniel Cretton directed.
