Ukraine confirmed on Thursday that Russia targeted a cargo ship in the Black Sea.
Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Plenchuk said the ship, which Russia hit with a missile, was in Romania’s maritime economic zone at the time of the attack, adding that Russia used Tu-22 bombers in the attack.
For his part, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sepia described the Russian attack as blatant, stressing that it threatens freedom of navigation and global food security.
While the Romanian Navy denied targeting the grain ship in its territorial waters.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory in February 2022, the Black Sea has witnessed numerous attacks by both Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Moscow has repeatedly launched drone and missile attacks on ships, ports and infrastructure used to export Ukrainian grain.
While Ukrainian forces have repeatedly launched attacks on the Russian naval fleet in the Black Sea, in and around Crimea, using unmanned boats, drones and missiles.
But those confrontations subsided slightly more than a year ago, after Moscow agreed to an agreement brokered by Turkey and the United Nations, which facilitated the passage of Russian and Ukrainian agricultural exports across the Black Sea for a year before its effects expired in July 2023, without being renewed.
