Het aantal pasgeboren baby’s dat ernstig ziek wordt door kinkhoest neemt snel toe. Vooral in gebieden met een lage vaccinatiegraad, zoals de Biblebelt, zijn veel ernstig zieken. Het RIVM noemt de uitbraak zorgelijk. ‘Als je hoest of snottert, blijf uit de buurt van hoogzwangere vrouwen en pasgeboren baby’s.’
