The number of matches that each club will play will increase in the first round, which will be held in a group system, as each team will play 8 matches against 8 different competitors, (4 on the field and 4 outside it).
The 8 teams will obtain the highest points in the league stage, from first to eighth place. They will qualify directly to the round of 16, which will be held in a home-and-away system in the current form, until the final round.
The 16 teams that occupied positions from ninth to 24th will play two home and away matches, with 8 of them qualifying for the round of 16 as well.
UEFA confirmed that the new Champions League will receive special financial support, during the Union’s Executive Committee meeting in Paris
The change in the format of the competition from the group stage to a single league, similar to the European Basketball League, will bring with it differences in income, as each of the 36 teams qualifying for the regular league stage will receive a fixed amount of 18.62 million euros, which is slightly higher than the profits of the regular stage. The current groups in which each team receives 15.5 million euros upon participation only.
An amount of 2.1 million euros will also be paid in the event of a win in one match, and an amount of 700 thousand euros in the event of a draw, which is somewhat less than it is now despite the increase in the number of matches during the first round from 6 to 8 for each team.
It will be important to reach the highest possible level among the 36 teams in order to obtain additional profit, as each team will receive a new sum of money based on the position in which it will finish in the final ranking table.
The bottom of the table, ranked 36th, will receive 275,000 euros, with the value of the reward increasing further with each advanced position, reaching 10 million euros for the first-place holder.
Moreover, UEFA will grant a bonus of 2 million euros to the teams that will be able to qualify from the first stage between first and eighth place and move directly to the knockout stage (round of 16), while those that occupied positions from ninth to sixteenth will receive An additional prize of one million euros.
These revenues will increase significantly compared to the current form of the Champions League, as the clubs that qualify for the round of 16 will receive 11 million euros, 12.5 million euros will be paid to qualify for the quarter-finals, and 15 million will be paid if they reach the semi-finals.
Each team that plays in the new Champions League final will receive 18.5 million euros, and another 6.5 million euros has been allocated to the team that wins the championship cup, an increase of 10 million euros over the previous prizes for the champion team, which represents an increase of 20% of profits compared to the prizes of previous editions. The winning team used to receive 20 million euros, and now the amount has risen to 25 million.
In the old Champions League, Real Madrid is the club with the highest income with about 91 million euros, Bayern Munich follows closely with 87.2 million euros, then Manchester City with 87 million euros, then the other two Spanish teams are Barcelona with 82 million euros, and Atletico Madrid with 81.7 million euros. But that money will be improved when the tournament turns into an open league in which each team plays 8 matches.
