Today, Saturday, the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works determined the completion rates for the expansion and rehabilitation projects of the (Baghdad-Kut) and (Baghdad-Kirkuk) roads, while confirming that the two projects will be completed during the current year 2024.

The Director General of the Department of Roads and Bridges in the Ministry of Construction, Hussein Jassim Al-Musawi, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “the department is continuing to implement its investment plan,” pointing out that “with regard to road development, there is a project to expand the (Baghdad-Kut) road, which The completion rate exceeded 75%.
He stressed that “work is continuing, and we are witnessing works, achievements and openings of projects, roads and bridges that serve and supply the national network with important additions,” noting that “the work of the (Baghdad-Kut) road will be completed before next June according to the plan.”
He pointed out that “the first phase of the road expansion, which is 60 kilometers, has completed most of its parts, and what remains is only the final layer, the surface layer, and the furnishing work, which constitute approximately 20% of the work volume.”
Regarding the (Baghdad-Kirkuk) road, Al-Moussawi stressed that “the project is considered the largest rehabilitation process undertaken by the department in more than three decades, as the length of the road is 400 kilometers, and witnesses an integrated rehabilitation of the two corridors back and forth, starting from the borders of the Baghdad Municipality and ending with the municipal borders.” Kirkuk is approximately 200 km away.
He explained that “the road work will be fully completed during the current year 2024, as important sections of it have been completed and entered service, and other sections are awaiting their turn in completion,” indicating that “the road is different from before after the maintenance work that was conducted on it, as radical maintenance operations were carried out on sections that were damaged.” Other damaged sections that had high ruminations were completely removed, and the road was reconstructed in a new way to be compatible with the loads that pass through it, as it connects the northern governorates to the capital, Baghdad.”
He pointed out that “the road also witnessed the introduction of regular turns in specific areas, the expansion of some of the cities that it passes through, such as the Al-Khalis and Al-Touz districts, and the establishment of service roads parallel to the main roads, the aim of which is to separate the internal local movement in these cities from the general movement that takes the Baghdad-Kirkuk International Road.” “.
He noted that “the road also includes, in agreement with the security authorities, the establishment of regular checkpoints and weighing stations, which have been paved with concrete paving to accommodate and withstand the high loads of cargo coming from the north towards the capital,” noting that “there are three sections on which work is still ongoing, one of which is a section with a length of 64 feet.” km, the other is 110 kilometers long, and the remainder of the road is in a third stage.”
He stated that “the completion rates for the remaining three sections of the road range between (60-70%), and will be fully completed during the current year, and the international road (Baghdad – Kirkuk) will become passable and safe with great smoothness, in addition to ensuring a significant decrease in accidents.”
