Liverpool’s youth team withdrew from their friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday due to a racist incident.
According to the Sun newspaper, Liverpool’s under-19 team refused to continue the match against Frankfurt and left the field after one of its players was subjected to racist abuse.
She pointed out that one of the Frankfurt players used a racist phrase against one of the Liverpool players, which prompted the Reds to decide not to complete the match.
For his part, Eintracht Frankfurt’s sporting director, Timo Hardung, said that the player accused of directing racism was misunderstood.
“Our academy reflects the values of Eintracht Frankfurt, it is multicultural and we have clear principles that we live by and constantly demand,” Hardung added.
“There is no place for racism among us, but we still take such an accusation seriously,” he continued.
“Our player pointed out that he used the word digga, which is common in youth slang, meaning brother or brilliant, and does not carry any racist connotation,” he stressed.
“We can rule out racism, it’s a linguistic issue, so we hope we’ve cleared up the misunderstanding with the players involved and the Liverpool officials,” he concluded.
