Even the famously no-holds-barred Phoenix Open places limits on debauchery on the golf course.
The game is being held at TPC Scottsdale, and fans will no longer be allowed in around 2 p.m. Saturday because the venue is too crowded. They also briefly halted alcohol sales at several locations around the ballpark in hopes of slowing down the partying.
This is the first time the Phoenix Open has had to turn away ticket holders (at least briefly).
Despite less than ideal weather conditions, large crowds of people flocked to Scottsdale. It rained most of the morning with temperatures in the mid-40s until the sun peeked through the clouds and temperatures climbed into the mid-50s.
“Due to higher than normal crowds, the gates to the WM Phoenix Open are temporarily closed and shuttle service to the event is suspended,” the event wrote on social media. “Shuttle service back to the parking lot will continue to operate. Check us regularly channel for updates.”
Dubbed “The Greatest Show on Turf,” the Phoenix Open is unlike anything in golf. As many as 200,000 fans packed TPC Scottsdale’s stadium court with cheers, boos and the occasional shower of beer.
The epicenter of the raucous hurricane was the stadium’s 16th hole, a par-3 multi-story frat party where “Quiet Please” signs were met with ample disdain.
