The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been arrested in Texas on at least a third offense of driving under the influence, according to prison records. The legal issues come as the younger Mahomes prepares to lead his team to the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.
Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, was arrested Saturday night in Tyler and was being held on $10,000 bail. He was released Sunday, according to jail records in Smith County, Texas. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Mahomes Sr.’s attorney has not yet responded to a request for comment.
His arrest comes more than a week before his son leads the Chiefs against San Francisco in Las Vegas as Kansas City attempts to defend its Super Bowl title.
The younger Mahomes will almost certainly face questions on Monday’s Super Bowl media night about whether his father’s arrest will be a distraction. That could be a storyline next weekend.
Records show Mahomes Sr. was arrested on the same charge in 2019 and sentenced to 40 days in jail. He played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball as a pitcher for the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.
