ODI World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins will be rested during Australia’s white-ball tour against England. Reigning Allan Border medalist Mitch Marsh will captain the side for the five one-day matches against England after leading the team in the recent T20 World Cup.
Australia will also play three T20 matches against Scotland and England in September before the 50-over series begins. Cummins’ absence is part of a “pre-planned long-term load management strategy.” Star speedster Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will miss the T20 matches but will return for the ODI matches.
This is the first tour since veteran opener David Warner officially retired, with young blaster Jack Fraser-McGurk named in both squads. Experienced wicketkeeper Matthew Wade had a poor showing during the T20 World Cup and was left out by Josh Inglis.
Western Australia young gun Cooper Connolly has been named in the T20 squad for his first national selection.
“This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players in the absence of David Warner and Matthew Wade, while also giving some older players time to prepare for the summer back home and next year. Preparing for a busy first half of the year.
“We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in a T20 squad, having previously brought in players such as Jack and Spencer. [Johnson],Xavier [Bartlett] and aaron [Hardie] in the past 12 months. They are exciting prospects joining the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white-ball lineup.
“With the Championship trophy on our doorstep early next year, a white-ball series against Pakistan in the summer and a big home Test series against India, we have a lot of planning going on over the next six months.
“This includes the gradual integration of new players into our white-ball team who have earned international opportunities through outstanding performances in the Big Bash or state cricket tournaments.”
