Wimbledon kicks off next week, ushering in the return of a quintessentially British event. Sadly, there will be another rain – rain.
Tennis matches begin on Monday. Forecasters are predicting showers for part of the opening week, but the tournament is expected to get off to a sunny start.
Met Office meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said it would feel pleasant on Monday as the weather was “mainly dry” with maximum temperatures around 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.
She added: “Looking ahead to Tuesday, there may be a few showers around the afternoon.
“There will be some sunny periods between these showers and maybe a little warmer temperature, like 22 or 23 degrees.
“As we start looking ahead to mid-week, it looks like we’ll see dry clouds with a chance of light rain at times Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday.
“Temperatures are still similar to average, so they will drop into the mid-20s by the second half of the week. But we will have more details closer to that time.
Asked for advice for Wimbledon spectators, she said: “Always bring a raincoat and an umbrella, just in case, and sunscreen in case it’s hot. And maybe a hat.
Gledhill said the unsettled weather was caused by a jet stream heading towards the UK, causing low air pressure in the country.
“Conditions are quite variable right now because of the location of the jet stream,” she said.
Showers are possible in northern Scotland on Saturday, with scattered rainfall possible in parts of northern England and Wales.
“The best sunshine is likely to be over southern and eastern England this afternoon and then also Northern Ireland and northern England,” Gleichiel said.
“Today’s temperature [Saturday] The maximum temperature will be 23 degrees, maybe 24 degrees. Maybe it’s the 25-degree remoteness of the remote southeast, but it does feel cooler in northern Scotland.
“Sunday is usually a day of scattered showers, with quite a bit of cloud in most places, but with some gaps between clouds. The best sunshine is likely to be in the south-west of England, but also in the south-east.
“It could be 22 or 23 degrees in the southern areas and in the teens to mid-teens in the northern areas.”
