Rob Savage’s horror Other Mommy topped the UK-Ireland box office with a £2m opening weekend, as Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning started its run in fifth place.
Universal’s Other Mommy opened to £2m from 526 sites for a £3,770 average. That is slightly down on the £2.2m start of fellow Blumhouse Productions title Insidious: Out Of The Further from August, at a £4,170 average. It is up on the £1.3m start for a £2,710 average of Blumhouse’s Obsession from May, but that title went on to be a box office outlier with over £20m lifetime.
Amazon MGM Studios’ Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson dropped 44% on its second weekend, released by Sony. The film added £1.9m for a £7.3m total to date, already passing the £6.3m cume of last year’s fellow Hoover adaptation Regretting You.
Paramount action title Heart Of The Beast held third spot for a third successive weekend after another decent hold, dropping just 33%. It put on £815,000 and is up to £5.4m.
Sony horror Resident Evil put on a further £780,000 in its fourth session, dropping 42%, and is up to a strong £12.7m.
Sony also opened Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning to £621,000 from 610 sites at a low £1,020 average. That is down on the £2.5m full opening of David Fincher’s The Social Network, which told the first part of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg’s story.
The top five titles brought in a cumulative £6.1m – dropping for the second consecutive weekend, down 23% on the previous session. The figure is still up 25% on the equivalent weekend from last year, but exhibitors will hope Universal-DreamWorks animation Forgotten Island and Disney scuba thriller Whalefall can entice audiences back next weekend.
Paul Greengrass’s historical action title The Uprising starring Andrew Garfield garnered £542,000 from 482 sites for Entertainment Film Distributors. That worked out at a £1,120 average, better than that of The Social Reckoning.
