A wildfire has spread rapidly in Northern California, forcing at least 13,000 people to evacuate their homes, with more extreme heat expected as the city declares a state of emergency.
The Thompson Fire broke out about 70 miles north of Sacramento, in and around the city of Oroville in Butte County.
The fire sent huge plumes of smoke and spread to about 12.1 square kilometers by Wednesday morning, and no part of the fire has been contained.
The city of about 20,000 people declared a state of emergency Tuesday night and several homes were destroyed, according to KCRA on Wednesday. There were no reports of injuries.
