NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that there is no consensus in NATO to accept Ukraine’s accession to the alliance.
Stoltenberg explained in a speech he delivered during the NATO summit meeting today in Washington that the talk is currently about bringing Ukraine closer to the alliance, not joining it.
He pointed out that in order to accept a country into NATO, it is necessary to reach a comprehensive agreement, adding that the alliance countries have reached an agreement for Ukraine to become a member of NATO, but it is too early to talk about the date.
He continued: “I can say that we are currently working to bring Ukraine closer to membership in the alliance.
Stoltenberg pointed out that NATO’s commitment to support Ukraine militarily in the long term will accelerate the end of the war.
He stressed that the failure of some allies to fulfill their promises towards Ukraine has put Ukrainian soldiers in a real predicament.
He stressed that the planned military aid package for Ukraine will help it join NATO, noting that there is a view that Washington alone provides for Ukraine’s military needs, which is not true.
The NATO summit is being held in Washington from July 9-11, and Bloomberg previously reported that Zelensky’s delegation was unhappy that the alliance did not invite Ukraine to join its ranks at the summit.
