The NCAA committee on Wednesday recommended adding flag football to its emerging women’s sports program, a major step in the three departments.
The NCAA said at least 65 schools have sponsored Flag Football at the club or university level, moving in this direction. With the NFL push, Flag Football has also been added to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The NFL has vigorously promoted flag football, including the start of the global ambassador program in 2022. From the domestic level, the league and its teams have been promoting flag football in a national high school sport.
Once you enter the NCAA’s emerging women’s sports program, Flag Football needs at least 40 schools to sponsor the program and reach a minimum in the game, and the minimum in the game and the participation of the players can be considered an NCAA champion.
NCAA’s emerging women’s sports program was created to help promote more opportunities for women and provide schools with more opportunities for sponsoring teams.
The last sport carried out through the program was women’s wrestling, which was approved last month as the NCAA’s 91st championship sport. The first women’s wrestling champions will be held in 2026.
Currently, five other sports are participating: acrobatics and tumbles, equestrians, rugby, stunts and triathlons. The program has previously appeared five sports to win NCAA titles: Rowing (1996), Ice Hockey (2000), Water Polo (2000), Bowlling (2003), and Beach Folleyball (2015).
