Latvian Prime Minister Ivica Selina said on Wednesday that French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative to send forces to Ukraine was not well prepared, and that NATO was not ready for that.
Selena said at a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin: “With regard to sending forces to Ukraine, I do not think that this initiative has been well prepared, because the discussion around it has not yet matured, and I think that we in NATO are not ready to do that.”
In addition, she stressed that Ukraine itself has not asked NATO countries to send troops, adding that there is no need to focus on what Kiev is not asking for.
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris would do everything in its power to prevent Russia “from winning this war.” According to him, the heads of Western countries discussed the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, but it has not yet been possible to reach a consensus.
Commenting on Macron’s statements, the Kremlin warned that such a development would inevitably lead to a direct military clash between Russia and NATO.
