The head of the Olympic Committee, Aqil Muftan, confirmed that he and the rest of the members of the Executive Office will continue to work to ensure the success of Iraq’s participation in the Paris Olympics.
A statement by the Olympic Committee’s media received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated that “the French Ambassador to Baghdad, Patrick Durel, received at his home on Saturday evening, the head of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee, Aqeel Muftan, accompanied by the Iraqi athletes who qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris at the end of this month.”
He added, “The French Embassy celebrated the Olympic football team and the athletes who qualified from the Paralympic Committee in an evening also attended by the Third Deputy Chairman of the Olympic Committee, Ziad Hassan, and members of the Executive Office, Hussein Al-Amaidi, Bassem Ahmed, Khalil Yassin, Ibrahim Khalil, and Baidaa Gilan.”
In a brief speech, according to the statement, French Ambassador Patrick Dorrell expressed his “happiness with the qualification of a group of Iraqi athletes to the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris,” hoping that they “will present the levels expected of them, especially the football team, which will be the focus of Iraqi attention in the upcoming Olympics.”
Dorrell praised “the player Najla Imad, the world champion in table tennis for people with disabilities, who will participate in the Paris Paralympics next month,” expressing his “admiration for her determination and ambition despite the painful accident she was exposed to.”
For his part, the head of the Olympic Committee, Aqil Muftan, confirmed, through a speech he gave to those present, that he “and the rest of the members of the Executive Office will continue to work to make the Iraqi participation a success, and for the Iraqi champions to appear in a manner befitting the name and history of Iraq.”
He added: “We are happy with the cooperation shown by the French Embassy in Iraq, especially Ambassador Patrick Durel, who spared no effort in facilitating the procedures for Iraqi participation and completing all the requirements of the Iraqi mission.”
