Colombian star James Rodriguez continued his brilliance in the current edition of the South American Football Championship (Copa America 2024), after leading his country to the final of the tournament at the expense of the Uruguayan national team.
The Colombian national team won 1-0 over its Uruguayan counterpart in the semi-finals of the continental competition, currently being held in the United States.
James set up Colombia’s only goal, scored by his teammate Jefferson Lerma against Uruguay, during the match that took place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Wednesday evening local time (Thursday morning GMT).
James holds the record for the most assists in a single edition of the competition since 2011, having made 6 assists in the current edition, surpassing Argentine Lionel Messi, who made 5 goals for his teammates during the last edition (Copa America 2021), according to the tournament’s official website.
James provided two assists in Colombia’s 2-1 win over Paraguay and a goal in the team’s 3-0 win over Costa Rica in the group stage of the 2024 Copa America, before providing two assists in Argentine coach Nestor Lorenzo’s team’s crushing 5-0 win over Panama in the quarter-finals.
James, who plays for Brazilian club Sao Paulo, still has the chance to extend his record if he makes any more assists during the final match between Colombia and Argentina on Sunday evening local time (Monday morning GMT).
James seeks to lead the Colombian national team to win its second Copa America title, after winning the 2001 edition.
