For decades now, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been working together – both in front of the camera, and behind the scenes too. Now, in the wake of Air and The Last Duel, they’re starring alongside each other once again in The Rip, a new Netflix thriller film from writer-director Joe Carnahan, playing a pair of cops whose discovery of a vast cash stash throws up all kinds of ethical questions. Most notably: what if we nicked it? Check out the trailer:
In the best way, this looks exactly what you expect from a Damon-Affleck gritty thriller, playing on the duo’s partnership as cops with a long history – while Carnahan has proved a solid filmmaker over the years too, recent features like Boss Level and Copshop being the very definition of ‘muscular thriller’. Around Damon and Affleck there’s a strong cast here, including Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Brit action powerhouse Scott Adkins, The Flash’s Sasha Calle, and Teyana Taylor (soon to be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-hyped One Battle After Another). Here’s a brief synopsis: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”
Generally, Netflix only tends to start promoting its non-awards-season films around a month before release. That we already have a trailer for The Rip when it isn’t due to stream until January 2026 could be a promising sign – we’ll find out if The Rip truly rips when it arrives on 16 January.
