West Ham United have signed Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City for the remainder of the season. The deal is yet to be finalised, but the midfielder has agreed a move to the London Stadium.
It remains to be seen whether West Ham have the option to buy Phillips. They are paying him £140,000-a-week wages but talks over options are still ongoing. West Ham will consider their financial fair play status when deciding whether they can afford to pay Phillips on a permanent basis.
Short-term arrangements are expected to be finalized by the end of this week. Phillips will return from vacation on Tuesday and is scheduled to undergo a physical on Thursday. He has been a target for Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Juventus, but the biggest push has come from West Ham United.
David Moyes has been a long-time admirer of Phillips and tried to sign him from Leeds United two years ago. The 28-year-old moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2022 but failed to adapt to life under Guardiola. He is yet to start a Premier League game this season and will need to feature regularly to ensure he is included in the England squad for Euro 2024.
England manager Gareth Southgate has remained loyal to Phillips, who will compete with Edson Alvarez, Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse at West Ham. Alvarez and Ward-Prowse were signed after West Ham sold Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m last summer, but Moyes feels he needs to provide more cover in midfield.
