Chinese scientists have created a robot that works with a “mini human brain”, in an achievement that is the first of its kind.
He described it as a “brain on a chip,” which works like a human brain, using sensors and an AI algorithm that prompts the robot to move, grab objects and avoid obstacles.
Scientists explained that the brain shows signs of intelligence, similar to the human brain, by moving its limbs independently, and could lead to ways to repair damage to the human cerebral cortex and create other technologies to treat neurological disorders.
A team of Chinese scientists used stem cells, a type of cell that forms brain tissue in the body, to build the brain.
They paired it with a computer chip that relays instructions to the robot’s body, which is a combination of human cells and computer chips that works like a human brain.
Scientists from Tianjin University created the device using brain-computer interfaces (BCI) that combine electrical signals from the brain with computer chips.
The team explained that the robot has no eyes, and responds only through electrical and sensory signals sent by neurons.
The team noted that the pink dot above the robot’s shoulders in the images is just a cosmetic representation of what the brain will look like, not the actual tissue still being used in prototypes, according to South China Morning.
“Brain organ transplants are a promising strategy to restore brain function by replacing lost neurons and rebuilding neural circuits,” the scientists said.
The scientists concluded: “The research is still in the early stages of development, and it is still unclear whether organoids can be used to repair or rebuild damaged brain tissue.”
