Keely Hodgkinson had her season ended by injury less than three weeks after becoming the Olympic 800m champion. The 22-year-old Briton was due to compete in the Diamond League in September and his victory in Paris was the most watched Olympic event on British terrestrial television.
“I’m not racing anymore!! Unfortunately I had a little injury, but we accomplished everything I hoped to do this year, thank you all for the love and support! See you on the track next year.
Hodgkinson has won all nine 800m races this year and upon returning from France she immediately set her sights on breaking the world record of 1 minute 53.28 seconds which had stood since 1983.
However, that will have to wait until next year, when the British record holder will also be looking to improve on the two silver medals he won at previous world championships when Tokyo hosts the world championships in September.
