Israel’s “clear and repeated rejection” of a two-state solution is “unacceptable” and threatens to prolong a conflict with the Palestinians that has become a global threat to peace, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations described the two-state solution as the only way to meet the aspirations of both sides, saying that any refusal to accept it must be firmly rejected.
He said: “The permanent end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only come through the two-state solution.”
Guterres also repeated his call for more aid to be delivered to Gaza, saying that the quantities entering the Strip are largely insufficient. “It is a fantasy to believe that 2.2 million people can live on aid alone,” he said.
Guterres called for the establishment of more crossing points into Gaza and access to the north, saying that only seven of 29 humanitarian missions planned to the northern Gaza Valley in early January had been fully or partially accomplished.
He also called again for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, saying: “This will ensure that adequate aid reaches where it is needed, facilitate the release of hostages, and help reduce tensions across the Middle East.”
