Jamie George has been called up to help England’s women’s Six Nations team prepare for their clash with Wales after volunteering her services for head coach John Mitchell.
George, fresh off an encouraging Championship win for the England men’s team, joined Red Rose players Lark Atkin-Davies, Connie Powell, Amy Cockayne and May Campbell in Surrey on Wednesday Train together at the training base.
Mitchell developed a close relationship with the 90-cap Saracens star during his time as Eddie Jones’ assistant and the New Zealander hopes this will be the start of more knowledge sharing between the senior squad.
“I have worked with Jamie before and this was not forced or coerced by me. I have been in touch with him since I resigned as coach and wish him all the best in the Six Nations,” Mitchell said. “When I got the role, he said if you need any help, just speak up. He was the one who was really encouraging about the situation. We’ve made it work, and I think the girls love it.”
England captain Marlie Packer knows George from Saracens, whom she has represented since 2017, and has seen the exchange of skills with Steve Borthwick’s squad members benefit.
“The girls really enjoyed it. We didn’t want to force it because the guys had their own plans, the same as we did, so the timing needed to suit both parties,” Parker said. “We also have club links and Jamie has been doing some work with me at Saracens. It’s not just about the Red Roses, I know Bristol Bears do a lot for their players.”
Following the 48-0 win over Italy in the first round, Mitchell made seven changes to his squad for Saturday’s game against Wales at Ashton Gate. Centers Tatiana Hurd and Megan Jones, centre-backs Natasha Hunt and Holly Aitchison, prop Maude Muir, lock Rosie Galligan and number eight Alex Matthews is a new face.

Back-row Sarah Beckett was handed a three-match ban until the final game against France for a dangerous knockout against Italy, but Mitchell confirmed she will play in that game. Second row Zoe Aldcroft is one of eight players retained from the starting XV and will make her 50th appearance for the team.
“Zoe is a fierce competitor. She’s like a little springer spaniel in training! When she talks, the girls listen,” Parker said. “Everyone knows that everything she does and the way she goes about her business is world-class.”
