US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed on Sunday that the United States will not condone attacks on its forces in the Middle East and will respond to them.
Austin added in press statements, “The Iranian-backed forces are responsible for the ongoing attacks on American military personnel, and we will take the necessary steps to protect the United States and our forces in a timely and appropriate manner.”
US President Joe Biden said in a statement on Sunday evening that the attack on US forces was carried out by Iranian-backed extremist groups operating in Syria and Iraq.
The US Central Command announced that 3 soldiers were killed and 25 others were injured in a drone attack targeting a base in northeastern Jordan, and the Pentagon said that what the US forces were exposed to in Jordan was a dangerous escalation.
