The US Central Command said on Wednesday that the terrorist organization ISIS is trying to “reconstitute itself,” and the number of its attacks in Syria and Iraq is on track to double compared to last year.
Central Command said in a statement that ISIS claimed 153 attacks in both countries during the first six months of 2024. According to a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, the group was behind 121 attacks in Syria and Iraq during 2023.
The US Central Command explained that “the increase in attacks indicates that the terrorist organization ISIS is trying to reconstitute itself after several years of declining capabilities.”
