Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the third Test match against England in Rajkot due to a family emergency.
Ashwin on Friday became the ninth bowler in history and the second after Anil Kumble to take a Test wicket when he dismissed Zak Crawley in the final match of day two Reaching 500 Indians.
However, a few hours after the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced Ashwin’s immediate withdrawal from the team and his availability for the past three days is unknown.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully support Ashwin during these challenging times,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement. “BCCI expresses its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones is of paramount importance. The Board requests that the privacy of Ashwin and his family be respected as they navigate this challenging period. “
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla added on Twitter: “Wishing ashwinravi99’s mother a speedy recovery. He must hurry up and leave the Rajkot exam to Chennai to be with his mother.”
