Spanish Customs announced today, Monday, the seizure of 8 tons of cocaine in the port of Algeciras (Algeciras) in the south of the country, in a shipment hidden inside a container coming from Latin America.
Spanish Customs stated that the drugs were hidden inside a metal structure made of a special alloy with the aim of circumventing the scanners used by the authorities, so that only the shape of the product shown on the shipping slip appears in the image during the scanning, which is an electricity generator.
Customs authorities said they had never encountered a similar method of smuggling before.
Despite this fraudulent method, the scanning device revealed a “large quantity of goods” occupying almost the entire space of the metal structure in the container, which turned out to be “high-purity cocaine” with a total weight of 8 tons.
The statement stressed that this confiscation “is among the largest operations carried out in Spain in recent years.”
Customs explained that the container came from Suriname, Latin America, and stopped in Panama before arriving in Spain.
The authorities arrested the person who was supposed to receive the drugs in Spain.
