United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his concern about the escalation in the Middle East after the US strikes in Iraq and Syria, and called on all parties to take measures to reduce tensions.
A press statement delivered by the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, stated, “The Secretary-General is concerned about the risks of escalation. He calls on all parties to take concrete measures to reduce tensions and take into account the potential human and economic costs if the conflict expands in an already unstable region.”
The United States launched air strikes in Iraq and Syria at dawn today, targeting more than 85 targets carried out by long-range bombers launched from the United States.
These raids come in response to the targeting of an American base in Jordan by the factions, which resulted in the killing of 3 American soldiers and the wounding of more than 40 others.
