Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) are set to star in Ruin, a new thriller based on the screenplay by Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo (Marvel’s Eternals), which topped the Black List in 2017.
Hailing from Niki Caro, the director behind titles like The Mother and Mulan, the film is set in the ruins of post-WWII Germany, following a recently released camp prisoner (Gadot) who is forced to make an unlikely alliance with a German soldier (Schoenaerts) in a mutual quest to exact revenge on a Nazi SS squad. It brings Caro back to WWII following her work on The Zookeeper’s Wife, a Holocaust drama for Focus Features, starring Jessica Chastain.
Marc Butan will produce for MadRiver Pictures, alongside Jaron Varsano and Gadot for Pilot Wave Motion Pictures, Caro. Ludascripts’ Gillian Hormel and Aloe Entertainment’s Mary Aloe will exec produce alongside the Firpos, with Evan Powell overseeing for MadRiver. The Veterans oversees international rights and will launch the project to buyers at Cannes, with UTA Independent Film Group, WME Independent, and CAA Media Finance co-repping U.S. rights. Production kicks off early next year.
Best known for starring in the Wonder Woman films, Gadot is coming off of her role as the Evil Queen in Disney’s Snow White and is currently in production on The Runner, a new action thriller for Amazon MGM. Also coming up for her is the Julian Schnabel film Hand of Dante, which wrapped production last year. She is represented by WME and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Known for turns in films like Rust and Bone and The Mustang, Schoenaerts is currently filming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for Warner Bros and DC Studios. He’ll next be seen starring in The Old Guard 2 for Netflix and Terrence Malick’s The Way of the Wind. He is repped by CAA.
Previously directing Netflix’s hit action thriller The Mother, a Jennifer Lopez starrer that is one of the streamer’s most popular films of all time, as well as a live-action take on Mulan for Disney, Caro is also known for films like North Country, starring Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand, and her breakout, Whale Rider. She is repped by UTA.
The Firpos are with CAA and Untitled.
