The New York Times reported on Friday that five Democratic members of the US House of Representatives called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election race.
Earlier, US Democratic Senators Jon Tester and Peter Welch called on President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
The New York Times quoted a third Democratic senator from New Mexico, Martin Heinrich, who also called on Biden to withdraw.
“While the decision to withdraw from the campaign rests solely with President Biden, I believe it would be in the best interest of our country for him to resign,” he said.
Four other House Democrats separately called on President Biden on Friday to halt his campaign as pressure mounted on him, including Jared Huffman, Mark Veasey, Mark Pocan and Jesus Garcia.
“It is time to pass the reins to a new generation of Democratic leaders,” said a joint letter from House Democrats to Biden.
According to Reuters, a total of 28 out of 264 Democrats in the US Congress (more than 10%) explicitly called on Biden to end his election campaign.
After the disastrous debate with Donald Trump and public calls for the elderly Biden not to run for a second term, and explicit calls, the media reported that the White House chief has no intention of withdrawing from the presidential race under pressure from his family in particular.
