In 2016, Chelsea failed to defend any trophy, finishing runner-up to Manchester City in the WSL and losing to Arsenal in the FA Cup final. However, they returned to winning ways in 2017 when Chelsea won the WSL Spring Series, a shortened transitional season to help transition the WSL from a summer league format to a winter league, in line with the traditional football calendar.
