On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for the implementation of the first resolution issued by the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“This decision must be implemented,” Guterres wrote on the X platform. “Failure would be unforgivable.”
Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted the Israeli Foreign Minister, Yisrael Katz, as saying that his country “will not stop the fighting” in response to the Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan and the release of detainees.
“Israel will not stop firing,” Katz said. “We will destroy Hamas and continue fighting until the last hostage is returned home.”
It is noteworthy that the Security Council today adopted a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan, provided that this leads to a permanent ceasefire and the unconditional release of all detainees.
The Security Council voted in favor of the draft resolution, which was presented by the elected members of the Council and supported by the Arab Group, with a majority of 14 votes, while the United States abstained from voting.
