Istanbul /Nina/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he will travel tomorrow, Wednesday, to the city of Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation, to participate in the BRICS summit.
Erdogan confirmed in a speech he delivered today during his participation in an expanded meeting of the Justice and Development Party at the party’s headquarters in the capital, Ankara, that his country aims to strengthen its relations with the BRICS group, expressing his confidence that the “Kazan” summit will contribute to that.
He indicated that his participation in the BRICS summit comes in response to an invitation he received from his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and that he will participate in the expanded session of leaders at the summit.
Erdogan said: “The BRICS countries control about 30 percent of the Earth and represent 45 percent of the world’s population.”
Moreover, “40 percent of global oil production and 25 percent of commodity exports are carried out by these countries.”
Erdogan added: “These statements alone reveal the importance of the BRICS group. We want to sincerely develop our cooperation with this group, and I hope that the Kazan Summit will lead to this.”
Russia assumes the presidency of the current session of the summit, which began on Tuesday and will last for three days.
It is noteworthy that BRICS is a bloc founded in 2006, and includes China, Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa, before Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE joined it at the beginning of this year.
The economically oriented “BRICS” aims to give more representation in international issues to developing countries “that resist the hegemony of Western countries,” according to the bloc./End
