In his absence, Somerset teammate Shoaib Bashir was in the squad and he took four wickets on his international debut. Bashir joins Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley in England’s rotating attack, with the trio having only made three appearances for the side heading into the second Test.
After India’s 106-run victory in Vizag, the series resumed in Rajkot on Thursday with the two sides tied at 1-1. England will not call up substitutes and Leach will now return home.
The England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement: “He will fly home within the next 24 hours from Abu Dhabi, where the England team have been preparing for Thursday’s Test at Rajkot. Third Test. Leach will work closely with the medical teams in England and Somerset to help him recover.”
