The England national team escaped bidding farewell to the Euro 2024 tournament after turning the tables on Slovakia with a 2-1 victory today, Sunday, in the round of 16 competitions, setting up a date with Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
The first goal of the match was scored by Slovakia from Ivan Schranz in the 25th minute, before the English responded through Jude Bellingham (90+5) and Harry Kane (91).
England’s danger became clear towards the middle of the first half, when Trippier sent a perfect cross towards Harry Kane, who tried to meet it with a header, but it hit a defender’s head and turned into a corner.
With many attempts, Slovakia succeeded in taking the lead with a goal from Schranz after receiving a silky pass from Strelec inside the penalty area, before putting the ball in the far right corner for Pickford.
The beginning of the second half witnessed an early goal for the English through Foden, with which he equalized the score, but the referee disallowed it after the video technology showed that he was offside when the ball was passed to him by Trippier.
Strelic almost added the second goal for Slovakia in a wonderful way with a long-range shot that passed near the right post.
The English team took absolute control of the match in the last minutes, amid a complete retreat from Slovakia, hoping to protect Dubravka’s goal from conceding any goal.
In the last minutes, the England players were unable to find a suitable way to reach Dubravka’s net until the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Bellingham met a ball that came from Guehi’s head with a scissor kick, from which he scored a fatal equalizer, sending the two teams to two additional periods.
The start of the third half witnessed an early goal for the English, after Kane met an aerial ball with a header into the net, giving the Three Lions the lead for the first time.
