EXCLUSIVE: Director Hugo Ruiz has signed with Buchwald.
Ruiz wrote and directed the film One Night With Adela, the Spanish filmmaker’s debut feature which is currently available to stream via Amazon. Laura Galán stars as Adela, a street cleaner in Madrid hellbent on revenge against those who have made her life miserable. The thriller thrives on the concept of a one-shot sequence and belongs to an eventual trilogy currently in development, where all three films take place over the course of one night.
One Night With Adela also stars Gemma Nierga, Jimmy Barnatán, Raudel Raúl, Litus, Rosalía Omil, Fernando Moraleda and Beatriz Morandeira. XYZ is handling North American distribution for the film, with Latido and #ConUnPack are onboard for international sales.
Following the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023, Ruiz took home the Best New Narrative Director award, making him the first Spanish filmmaker to receive the accolade. He was also nominated for Best New Director at the São Paulo and Reykjavik film festivals, and the film was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Goya Awards.
His prior work includes various shorts including ¿Estás ahí? (2016), El Clavo (2015) and Taxi fuera de servicio (2011), which also surrounds Spain’s criminal underworld.
Ruiz, who is based in Spain, is a self-taught director whose career was sparked by the countless movies he devoured as a teenager. He says he always wanted to belong to the world of filmmaking and tell his own stories.
He will continue to be repped by Hirsch Wallerstein.
