Authorities in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have both declared public health emergencies over an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever. The move comes just days before Carnival celebrations kick off across the country. Dengue is considered a re-emerging disease as the number of reported cases worldwide has risen from 500,000 to 5.2 million between 2000 and 2019. FRANCE 24’s Julia Sieger tells us more.
