Doyle Malen scored a fine goal against his former club in Tuesday’s last-16 first leg tie against Borussia Dortmund at the Philips Stadium, but Luke de Jong’s second-half penalty earned PSV Eindhoven It was a tie.
Dutch international Malen shot hard from a small angle in the 24th minute, but the home team created better opportunities and finally pulled the ball back after De Jong scored from a penalty kick.
The goal took PSV’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 31 games and set up an even tie for the second leg in Dortmund on March 13.
“We should make the game calmer,” Hummels told Amazon Prime. “We let the intensity affect us too much. I saw a very competitive PSV team today.
“We didn’t control the ball well enough. In our home games, we just need to control the ball better. Then, I’m very confident that we will improve.”
This game is PSV’s first Champions League knockout match in eight seasons, and they have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
It was a game with few clear-cut chances as neither side invested much in attack in a cagey contest. Malik Tillman had a great chance to score as he established himself on the edge of the area, sending his shot wide as Dortmund’s defense parted in front of him.
Dortmund took the lead through a superb goal from Mullen, who spent four successful years at PSV before moving to the Bundesliga in 2021. Mullen appeared to be crowded out by two home defenders but fired a powerful shot from 14 yards out to give Dortmund the lead. The ball took a slight deflection and sailed over the crossbar, hitting goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

Early in the second half, PSV were awarded a penalty by referee Srjan Jovanovic when Dortmund defender Mats Hummels lunged at Tillman. Hummels received a healthy touch before taking contact with the German-born United States international, but VAR confirmed the decision on the field, much to the visitors’ dismay.
De Jong created a small part of the club’s history when he effortlessly fired from 12 yards, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy as PSV’s top scorer in the Champions League with nine goals.
