Great things happen when you get Danny Boyle and Jack O’Connell in the same circles. Just see the double-whammy of 28 Years Later and the Boyle-produced The Bone Temple, still rattling our synapses. And Boyle is back already with another supercharged slice of cinema, that looks set to continue his reputation as the chief chronicler of contemporary Britain, with O’Connell as his leading man. Before we (hopefully) get the third chapter of 28 Years Later, Boyle has directed Ink – about the rise of The Sun newspaper under the editorship of Larry Lamb, and the ownership of Rupert Murdoch; effectively, the birth of the tabloid press. Once again, it looks like the director is going maximum-Boyle here, bringing his signature kineticism to the story – a fitting complement to the nation experiencing the dizzying rush of tabloid sensationalism, as well as the sobering comedown that it resulted in. See the film’s snappy headline: ‘They broke the news.’ O’Connell here plays Lamb, with Guy Pearce as Murdoch, and Claire Foy as reporter Jules Davies. The script is by James Graham, adapted from his own play of the same name. The official synopsis describes Ink as “an explosive cinematic rollercoaster about a group of visionaries and misfits who had an idea for a new kind of news – one that would give the people what they want and would change the face of the world we live in today.”
Hopefully Ink proves another great film for Boyle’s roster – and keeps the momentum up so we can close out the 28 Years Later saga too. The film comes to UK cinemas from January 8, 2027, but it’s also screening imminently at the Venice Film Festival so expect the first reactions very soon. It’ll play at the London Film Festival, too, from October 12.
