Today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Culture announced that Iraq owns 4,000 heritage buildings, while indicating the launch of a group of initiatives to preserve Iraqi heritage.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Olayawi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “A group of initiatives were launched to preserve Iraqi cultural heritage, as the Ministry relies in protecting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage on providing protection through international organizations by registering cultural heritage sites and events.” At UNESCO by submitting original files.
He continued, “There is a group of sites and events that have been registered globally, which provides them with protection and enhancement, such as marshland activities and Arabic calligraphy, in addition to some sites such as waterwheels and other topics. From time to time, the Ministry works to prepare these files and submit them to UNESCO meetings,” indicating that ” International protection is necessary and important and provides a fertile environment for tourism, since these sites will be registered and published globally.”
He explained, “The Ministry, through the Heritage Department of the General Authority for Heritage and Antiquities, is working to follow up on all heritage buildings, the number of which has reached about 4,000 buildings in all governorates,” noting that “these buildings have heritage value and there are dedicated committees that follow up and monitor them and have expertise in Treatment, maintenance and restoration of heritage homes and buildings.”
He pointed out “the importance of involving young people in cultural and artistic life,” noting that “the Ministry has 22 departments and has a large number of workers and employees, most of whom are young people.”
