Ali told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Under the guidance of the Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Jabr al-Maliki, and the follow-up of the Director-General of the Department of Forestry and Desertification, Bassam Kanaan Abdul-Jabbar, and with the support of the United Nations World Food Programme, the cadres of the desert oasis project in Anbar Governorate, affiliated with the department, began planting 200 dunums in Green Oasis.
He added, “This is part of the department’s plan to rehabilitate desert oases, which are the first barrier wall and the green belt in the western region of Iraq,” noting that “drought- and salinity-tolerant seedlings of high-oleic olives, pistachios, and windbreaks were planted.”
Ali noted that “these seedlings are produced in the project’s nurseries, and these works fall within the scope of addressing the negative effects of climate change and combating desertification, as these trees act as buffers against the emerging dust storms, and reduce their effects on cities and agricultural lands.”
