In Exeter’s loss to Bayonne, France scored first through Tom Spring, who showed great pace at the try line. Exeter responded through Dan Frost and Henry Slade tied the score at 7-7 with a follow-up shot. Bayonne rebounded after a fumble by Exeter’s Josh Hodge; the fullback failed to control the ball and Kurt Mikotadze went down.
After Exeter University player Ollie Devoto received a yellow card, Bayonne made it 19-7 through Aureliano Calandre’s cross. Bayonne added a point through Victor Hannoun but the visitors had two quick shots in the second half through Dafydd Jenkins and Rus Tuima , narrowing the score gap to 26-17.
Despite Calandre being shown a yellow card, Bayonne’s resolute defense withstood Exeter’s pressure and the home side scored through Federico Mori in the 65th minute.
When Mori got his second try of the game, both Jenkins and Jack Yandle were booked, ending the visitors’ hopes of victory. Exeter lost another player in the closing stages as Joe Hawkins was shown a straight red card for a head-on collision.
